I saw Coraline on Sunday. Overall, I really liked it. But it is not without issues. I pretty much completely agree with this review by David Edelstein. I would, however, stress how much I dislike the addition of the neighbor boy character. It is especially disappointing at the end. One of the things I liked about the book was that Coraline quite competently took care of her last remaining problem. She didn’t need the help of some boy. There’s something kind of offensive about the fact that the story was changed to result in her being ‘rescued’ by a man.
But that said, it is quite a visually stunning film. Judging by the trailers, we have a lot more 3D movies on the way. By the way, you should definitely see it in 3D rather than the traditional manner. I had to pay a couple extra bucks for the privilege, but it was worth it.
In other news, not strictly movie news, Amazon has a special deal for Firefly: The Complete Series. It’s only $21.99. The sale is supposed to run until March 1, but in my experience supplies usually don’t last that long. So I’m saying you should go for it now if you’re going to at all—I’ve already put in my order.
