I had a fairly productive weekend. Aside from the usual weekly cleaning (though I dislike cleaning, I like a clean house. Go figure.), I managed to get caught up on The Daily Show and The Colbert Report, among others—though I still have to watch the most recent Battlestar Galactica. Sunday, I went to Marley & Me (Seriously, 30 minutes of tear-jerking is far too much. We all know the dog is going to die—take your shot more quickly.) at the cheap theater with a friend, then I got home and made dinner, processed a bunch of cabbage into what will eventually become sauerkraut, and starting a batch of eggnog. On top of that, Saturday I made delicious (and spicy-hot) pumpkin soup, and yesterday I roasted a chicken. I’ll be using the chicken remains for soup tonight. I like to make a soup base that I can heat to boiling, then I cook some pasta in it to finish it off. Delish.
On the sauerkraut. I made some with the cabbage from the CSA before, and it was really delicious. I still had a lot of cabbage left over that I hadn’t gotten to, but I was worried because a lot of it looked pretty moldy. Fortunately, after peeling back a bunch of layers of leaf, I found that most of the cabbage was perfectly fine. Unfortunately, I wasn’t expecting that, so I actually bought more cabbage at the grocery store to make up for what I was missing. Since I managed to recover a lot of the older cabbage, I didn’t use much of the new stuff, and now I’m back in the position of having extra cabbage that needs processing! Two things: 1) I’m glad the cabbage was cheap—only 0.67 per pound—in case I end up having to compost a bunch of it, and 2) I’m pretty sure I can wait a few weeks for the existing sauerkraut to finish fermenting, then make a new batch. Or, and this might be the way to go, buy some new things to ferment cabbage in. It doesn’t take much.
On the eggnog. I actually really like eggnog, but I didn’t have any over these holidays. Also, I’ve never made my own, despite my preference for making things from scratch. So I had a lot of interest when I saw this recipe from NPR’s Science Friday. I threw together a batch last night, and we’ll see how it works. Obviously it will take several weeks before it’s ready, so it’ll be a while before I know how it works. I almost didn’t make it because it is apparently extremely alcoholic. But given that the recipe calls for sitting around for a couple weeks, I think it will be ok if it takes me a while (probably a long while) to finish it off. I think I might still have to share with friends, though. I sense a dinner party in my future, and it will revolve around the ‘Nog.
Note that none of my activities involved football. Though I can’t help but be aware that the Superbowl was yesterday, I couldn’t care less about it. I did, however, pick up a set of 3-D glasses when I did some grocery shopping yesterday. Not for anything football- (or commercial-) related, but I understand that the next episode of Chuck will be in 3-D. I’ve heard it’s not an episode to write home about, but overall I enjoy the show, so I picked up the glasses. Besides, you never know when you’ll need some 3-D glasses. Apparently, 3-D is back in, <sarcasm>so it’s worth keeping a few pairs around</sarcasm>.
Maybe the glasses will be a fashion, like in the ‘50s. Gee whiz, I wouldn’t want to miss that train.

don't have to go all the way back to the 50's ....

It's in my Queue, along with Blood for Dracula. I don't know if the DVDs are in 3-D, but they might be fun to check out. And, hey, it's just Netflix.
