A Few Things

Last night’s movie: Rachel Getting Married.  My conclusion: quite good.  Of course, most people who are interested in it have already seen it, so I won’t say anything more.  Odd not to see a trailer for Watchmen at the beginning, though.

Just kidding.  But while we’re on the topic, I’m really looking forward to seeing Watchmen, which I hope to do this weekend.  The reviews are somewhat mixed, but it seems like a lot of the criticisms are along the lines of, “things don’t develop properly!”  I seem to remember that the original cut of the film was around three and a half hours, but this release is only two hours and forty minutes.  That’s a long time, but this is a big story.  It makes sense that things might feel a little rushed.

For what it’s worth, Metacritic currently shows the average score at 53/100.  That’s not good, but I note that it’s a mix of 100 reviews and super-low reviews.  Just like any movie, its best to find a reviewer that you generally agree with, then just see what that person has to say.

I’ve heard that there might be a director’s cut theatrical release of Watchmen this summer.  That would be great, but I’m not getting my hopes up.  In any case, I’ll probably get the longer cut on DVD.

In other news, Wyoming is one of the first states to officially accept federal stimulus money.  Also early in line is Texas, despite the governor’s protestations about not taking the money.  You can check it out here.
