The Great Flood

Yesterday was, on the whole, disappointing.

Let’s start with this weekend.  The weather was unbelievably nice, with temperatures in the mid-60s.  Saturday I went for a walk for a couple hours, and even got burned a bit.  I didn’t do as much on Sunday, but I did turn over my compost pile (much of it looks ready to go into the ground) and set up the drip hose in the front yard.

That last bit is important.

Yesterday morning, as I’m about to take a shower before going to work, I went downstairs to get some things out of the laundry room.  Imagine my surprise when my feet squished—that’s right, squished—on the carpet.  After a brief and somewhat dazed inspection, it seems apparent that when I turned on the hose outside to water, the flow was somehow mostly directed inside.  Into my basement.

But all’s well that ends well.  I hired some carpet peeps to come in and wet-vac the place, disinfect, and set up big ole fans for a few days.  When it’s dry, we’ll see if I think the carpets need to be cleaned. I rather doubt it just because it’s not like it was a great carpet in the first place.  It was really barely a step above an outdoor carpet.

Here’s what makes it an inconvenience more than anything else: for the first time in many years—at least before law school—I have an emergency fund.  So I never had to worry about how I was going to pay for it, and once I decided to hire people to take care of it, that’s pretty much that.  It’s awful nice to have some peace of mind.  In fact, it may be that my savings don’t decrease so much as not increase as much.  I’ll probably put it on my credit card (which is paid off, so there’s the no-interest grace period) and just divert some of what I’d ordinarily be putting into savings.  That would be nice.  It looks like all of this spending less than I earn and saving money is working out well.

The other disappointment didn’t work out quite so well.  We were supposed to have a blizzard yesterday and today.  I was actually excited, which is apparently what happens when you walk, rather than drive, to work.  The big disappointment is that we hardly got any snow.  What little we had blew away in the wind, which is bountiful.  But I’d much rather trade the wind for a lot of snow.

About the only thing that did go well yesterday is work, which is actually a very good thing because I spend a lot of time there.

Also, not writing for a while has recharged me a bit.  I’ve got a few posts kicking around that I’ll get to this week.
