Yay for Food!

Anyone who knows me is aware of my concern for food policy in the U.S.  To simplify, it just seems like food production is way too industrialized, and that makes our food less healthy and less environmentally sound.  Not that I don’t have some of that industrialized—even, from time to time, fast—food on occasion, but I cook most of my meals at home from scratch.  Being a CSA member helps, too.  I even grow a few things, fueled in part by compost from my kitchen and yard.

So it’s been very heartening to see developments like a food garden at the White House.  I think it’s unrealistic to think that industrialized food will disappear overnight, or that everyone will suddenly forego processed food.  But even a little change in U.S. eating habits can mean a big benefit.  And a bit of change in U.S. agricultural policy that encourages small farmers, sustainable practices, and local consumption can really go a long way.  I’m cautiously optimistic.

In other news, my basement is now dry, and at a cost of less than $300.  Sure, it would be better if I didn’t have to pay at all, but I’m happy that the price was reasonable, and I think it was worth it.  Plus, I’m stimulating the local economy a bit, and I’m sure the carpet-drying company appreciates it!
