Last weekend we had what would, with a little more wind, have been a blizzard. Observe:
These were taken first thing in the morning. By the time the snow stopped, the shallowest areas had a foot of snow, and I had drifts up to about four feet.
Leave it to spring to have the best snow. This is the most snow we’ve had all year. It’s almost all gone now, except a few places where it was piled (for example, after shoveling).
When it is completely gone, I think it will be time to plant some cool-weather food plants. Right now, I’m thinking radishes and fava beans. Both seem to be tolerant of the cold weather that we get at night, and will continue to get for months. Kale may be another option, and it will be something I can enjoy right away—the CSA doesn’t start for another two months.
Speaking of which, I’m working on eating through my freezer right now. It’s pretty slow going—I have a lot of it, and I might have a 2-cup serving of soup for dinner. It would be entirely possible for me to simply not go to the grocery store for at least another month. But I’m also craving fresh things, so I’ll probably moderate with some fresh vegetables. Plus, some of the stuff that I have frozen is pasta sauce, and I’m out of pasta. (As it turns out, broken-up lasagna noodles are not an ideal substitute.)
I love cold, and winter, and snow. But I’m ready for some warmer weather, with all the great things (fresh food, etc.) that come with it.
